Ongoing Assessment Strategies and Applications [Course B]

Course B is a practical inquiry into assessment strategies, with attention to differentiating between high standards and standardization. Participants come to understand how standards and standardization are related, and different.
In this course, Making Learning Visible is the foregrounded framework that participants come to understand deeply, while Teaching for Understanding, Studio Habits of Mind and the Integrated Learning Framework are incorporated by instructors in the coursework design and referred to regularly for ongoing transparency, reflection and checking for participant understanding.

Participants develop protocols, tools and applications that are useful for assessing and deepening their own learning, as well as their students’ learning. Participants learn strategies for involving students in the co-creation of assessments of learning. Participants re-understand that what students say, do and make are important data, revealing understanding through the ability to apply knowledge in new and novel experiences. Participants come to under- stand the difference between assessments that sort and name proficiency and failure, and assessments that provide timely information to educators and students about what is understood, what is misunderstood, and next steps for instruction, research and continuous learning.

Participants engage in multiple methods of weaving and embedding assessment into learners’ inquiries in ways that are both retrospective and prospective. Participants acquire collaborative strategies for ongoing assessment that open up the classroom to more flexibly respond to student needs, ideas and questions, creating more equitable and resilient spaces for learning. Participants create a portfolio of shifts in thinking and new strategies for ongoing and summative performance-based assessment.

In this course, participants learn the latest and most effective strategies of assessment for learning and how to use the arts to construct, reveal and assess understanding (as well as mis-understandings). There is a special emphasis on the Making Learning Visible framework, thinking routines and the Studio Thinking Framework as a tool for both ongoing and summative performance based assessment.

Understanding Goals

Participants will understand how to use research based frameworks to prepare students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding about what they are learning.

Participants will understand how art centered practices support students to make their knowledge and under- standing visible to others for reflection, revision and continuous improvement.

Participants will understand how to involve students as co-creators of assessment to build equitable and socially just learning environments.

I loved the idea that arts integration allows for students to display their learning using different skills (drawing, movement, etc.) and show success in a multitude of ways. It allows for the opportunity to display creativity, be collaborative, and present their work and their thinking in different forms. It puts the emphasis on the process versus the product.
