Theatre of the Oppressed: Mindfulness, Meditation and Liberation

This workshop will explore the rich, deep, powerful practices of mindfulness, dishabituation, and embodiment within the corpus of Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, focusing on practical techniques for transforming and finding liberation through somatic and energetic awareness in the personal, interpersonal, and political dimensions. We will use demechanization, dynamization, image theatre, forum theatre, and rainbow of desire while developing presence, focus, and a strong capacity for meditative awareness. Open to anyone with a desire to use theatre, art, and meditation to explore a powerful approach to transforming self and society. 

Instructor Jiwon Chung is a professional actor, director, and a key theorist of Theatre of the Oppressed. He is the Artistic Director of Kairos Theater Ensemble, adjunct professor of Theater and Social Justice at Starr King School at the Graduate Theological Union, and past President of the national organization for Theatre of the Oppressed.

NTC Project GLAD Tier I Certification: Classroom Demonstration and Planning (4 Days)

Join other educators who are using the power of NTC (National Training Center) Project GLAD's (Guided Language Acquisition Design) integrated literacy model  to build high levels of language, literacy and cultural proficiency in their classrooms, schools and communities!  While the NTC Project GLAD model is designed for English Learners, it is highly effective for all students.  

In this four-day training, teachers plan and prepare standards-based units with expert guidance AND see the model in action as an NTC Project GLAD Trainer works with students to:  

  • Build high levels of academic and social language using many of the strategies featured in the two day workshop.
  • Engage in collaborative and cooperative learning structures.
  • Create a positive classroom culture over four mornings.
  • Use academic language in context and negotiate for meaning in meaningful activities that promote 21st Century skills and directly address components of California's ELA/ELD Framework.

Bay Area Writing Project (Part 1) : It's NOT Whatever

It’s whatever. People say this when they feel they are powerless and must accept a situation. Assata Shakur, however, asserted the more we get used to our oppression, the more we think of it as the normal state of things. Such a phenomena is created by both structural and cultural conditions, as well as one's personal relationship to change and sense making. If this problem can be located at these intersections, so can potential solutions. “It’s NOT Whatever,” allows us to re-imagine a “dangerous” (Ladson Billings, 1999) kind of teacher development that authentically cultivates humanizing, critically conscious, intellectually engaged, and reflective practitioners.

About Keynote: Dr G Reyes

Coming from East Oakland, California, Dr. G Reyes is currently a Scholar at Stanford University where he primarily focuses on research and professional development with teachers, school leaders, and districts associated with language practices, program/school design, communities of practice, and performance assessments. As a professional in the field of Education, he has had a variety of experiences in K-12 schooling, Youth Development, teacher development, and teacher preparation. He has been blessed to work with committed and passionate professionals, youth, and families as a university lecturer in teacher education; as a high school principal at a small school in East Oakland; an elementary, middle, and high school teacher; an Executive Director and Program Director of a Youth Development community-based organization that focused on intersecting arts and social justice; a teacher/school leader developer/coach; and a cultural worker/youth development program leader developer/coach.

Inventing Our Future 2016 brings educators and community leaders together to build collaborative relationships and professional practice. Poetry for the People: Bay Area Writing Project

In this course we will focus on poetry’s power to speak the truth, create a community of trust, and engender transformation. Exploring poetic traditions from multiple cultures and disparate voices, we will read, discuss,  draft and workshop poems together.  Responding to poets such as June Jordan, Joy Harjo, Francisco Alarcon, or Lee Young Lee, we will also try out hand at various forms we can use in our classrooms, including the Blues, Affirmation poems, the Ghazal and the Tanka. Participants will leave with several packets of poems and a few exercises they can use in their own classrooms, as well as some writings to map their own worlds.

Lauren Parsons Muller currently teachers Poetry for the People and Trauma and the Arts at City College of San Francisco, where she chairs the Interdisciplinary  Studies Department. She has co‐facilitated BAWP writing retreats in the past and looks forward to the  electricity of teachers writing and thinking together. She co-edited June Jordan’s Poetry for the People (Routledge Press, 1995) and Reckonings: Short Fiction by Native American Women (Oxford UP, 2006).

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from a cultural icon! Julia Parker is often described as a “national treasure” for ensuring the legacy of the Miwok-Paiute people in Yosemite. She served as a cultural demonstrator in Yosemite for more than 60 years, becoming the park’s longest-tenured employee. Although she retired from her official role in 2015, this workshop gives you the chance to spend two days with Julia, her daughter, Lucy Parker, and granddaughter, Ursula Jones, as they guide you through traditional basket-weaving techniques. As you create your own unique basket, discover Yosemite’s fascinating cultural history and hear the stories that have lived on through generations of families. All materials are provided, and you will take home your own beautiful handmade basket as a keepsake of this special Yosemite experience. This workshop begins on Saturday morning in Yosemite Valley and runs through Sunday afternoon.

The Black Teacher Leadership & Sustainability Institute is an experiential institute providing ample opportunities for Black teachers to share, reflect, and set intentions for how to lead from the classroom. The Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP), housed in the Graduate School of Education, is a collaborative program between University of California, Berkeley and Bay Area schools. Since 1974, BAWP has been a vital resource for teachers and schools in the Bay Area, not only in the teaching of writing but also as a model of professional development, teacher leadership and reform. Firmly rooted in the belief that teachers are the best teachers of teachers, BAWP offers workshops for teachers, taught by teachers, throughout the school year and each summer, serving hundreds of teachers and their students each year.
